Grammar girls book spot in final

LARNE Grammar booked their place in the Ulster Schools’ Shield final with a win over Rainey Endowed this week.

The local school needed penalty flicks to overcome their last-four opposition, with talented ‘keeper Ayeisha McFerran making some key saves.

In the keenly-contested match, played at Ballyclare High School, the scores were locked at 0-0 at the end of normal time and there was still no breakthrough after 20 minutes of extra time.

Captain Courtney Burns stepped up and scored the first penalty stroke and Rainey responded to make it 1-1.

Larne’s second stroke was saved by the opposition ‘keeper and Rainey netted to make it 2-1.

The Grammar missed their next stroke, but McFerran made an excellent save to keep her team in the game.

McFerran pulled off a further two amazing stops, with Ruth Maguire and Kerry McIlwaine both scoring their strokes to secure victory.

Larne face Strathearn School in the final, a date for which has yet to be confirmed.
