High five for the Castle girls

IT was time to put all the pre-season hard work to the test as Ballycastle Ladies Hockey Club took to the pitch against Ballynahinch in this season's curtain-raiser.

With the girls wanting to push on from the great pre season win against Ballymena the week before it was vital that they got off to a good start.

A few new faces have joined the squad this year with Kelly Maybin stepping in at centre midfield, LJ Kernohan playing sweeper, Adele McIntyre dropping in at left back and Holly Watterson securing right midfield.

The home side got off to a flyer, with Maybin pulling the strings from the first whistle it wasn't long before 'Castle were on the attack down the left flank with the inform Kitty Dickson and young gun Laura Todd.

Good inter play between the two found Dickson at the edge of the circle, with an early crisp shot finding the bottom corner Ballycastle were on top with only a minute on the clock!

Ballynahinch couldn't find an answer to the home sides speed and attacking play with sharp crisp passing ripping them apart.

It wasn't long before the lead doubled, centre forward Niki O'Rielly was up to her tricks again, set up by Dickson she unleashed an unstoppable strike into the bottom corner.

Sweeper Kernohan was stopping any chance of an away attack and was the catalyst of the home sides play, linking well with Maybin and Watterson.

Kitty 'Giggs' Dickson was revelling in her left wing role and was causing the away side enormous problems, so much so that she added to her tally with a clever second leaving the score at the interval 3-0.

Ballycastle made a few changes at half time which saw the introduction of Chambers, Webber and Wilkinson. 'Hinch capitalised on the changes and pressed early on and forced the home 'keeper McMullan into an excellent one-on-one save, her first piece of action after 43 minutes.

Though the away pressure was to be short lived and any hope of a comeback was all but banished five minutes later when Maybin pushed forward and finished off an excellent passing move, grabbing her first goal on her debut! Watterson was proving her worth and was causing as many problems down the right as Dickson was on the left.

Not content with sitting back 'Castle worked the ball impressively and a perfectly weighted ball by Rielly found Chambers at the back post to neatly slot home number five.

It was such a high paced and skilful game by the home team, and an all round squad effort! Player of the match was Kelly Maybin. Also a big thank you to our supporters who braved the weather and the umpires. The girls travel to Ballynure this coming Saturday.
