Hockey players all set for new season

BALLYMONEY Hockey Club are already in full flight for the forth coming hockey season although a few of the girls have been in training for the most of the summer with the ulster and Irish squads.

Robyn Chambers, Katie Mullan and Emma Kernohan all played for Northern Ireland and came away winners in the United Kingdom school games in Wales.. Emma Kernohan also played for the Irish u16s in the European championship in Spain where they finished 4th.

Katie Mullan played in a series with the Irish u18 in England where they swept the boards. Sammy Jo Greer for the newly reformed Irish u21s who travelled to Portugal for the European championships which they won.

Katie and Sammy-Jo were then selected to train with the Irish seniors and both received their first Irish senior cap v Wales on the 24th August.

Mark Evan has returned as 1stxl captain and the team has seen a few changes over the summer break. Katie Mullan has left for university, Jan Hamilton has returned to Devon, Jill Kennedy has gone travelling.

On the plus side Lauren Steen (Barr) has returned from her studies, Bridget Cleland has returned after maternty break, Sammy-Jo Greer has returned after transferring studies.

Diane Kirgan has taken on a very talented 2ndxl and hopes to coach them to league and cup success, and Lynne McCartney has returned to coach the 3rd xl.

Lauren Steen has been given the honour of 1stxl captain this season and will be hoping to lead the team to yet another excellent season.

The 1stxl play Ards away on Saturday at 2.30pm in the 1st match of the Ulster shield and the 2nd and 3rdxl begin their league matches the following saturday
