Ian inspired

THE senior golfers were given the opportunty to strut their stuff on Monday of last week. The winner of the July Open for seniors was Ian Montgomery. This eighteen handicap player took the honours with an inspiring 43 points.

Ian was looking good after nine holes with 19 points on his card. A string of net pars played a key role in this scoring. He found a rich vein of form on the back nine and returned an impeccable 24 points. Back to back birdies at holes twelve and thirteen secured him a mighty eight points. Par figures at holes three, ten, seventeen and eighteen provided the necessary stability towards his winning effort.

Runner-up was Ben McCallum with another highly competitive round of 42 points. Off his twenty-five handicap Ben managed to produce a steady 21 points over each nine. Par figures at holes one, ten and seventeen were his most commendable scores. With nothing worse than a double bogey on his card Ben put himself into a winning position.

Eight handicapper Collie Nash is now enjoying this calibre of golf and proving very competitive. Collie was third with his effort of 40 points. He started fast with two birdies and four pars on the opening six holes. Holes one and six threw up the birdies. He tapered off the nine with a trio of bogeys. His homeward nine comprised six more pars to go along with bogeys on holes thirteen, fourteen and eighteen.

Five handicapper Joe Dowey won the gross award. Joe succeeded with his total of 32 gross points. On his way to a gross 74 Joe incurred bogeys on holes three, four, seven, twelve, fifteen and sixteen. Birdies on holes eight and ten helped to reduce some of the deficit. Pars on the rest of the holes helped him obtain this category award.
