Kirsty misses out on medal in Glasgow

The Ballymena woman eventually finished sixth in the women’s trap discipline after losing out in a shoot-off as she attempted to finish in the top four, which would have earned her a chance of a bronze medal.

She had qualified from the morning session for the semi-finals from which the six qualifiers would be whittled down to four, to compete for the medals.

Kirsty’s hopes of a medal looked to have ended after she made a slow start, hitting just one of her first seven targets to trail behind her competitors.

However, she found her form in spectacular style by hitting her final eight targets to force her way into a shoot-off with two other competitors from Australia and New Zealand.

With a place in the bronze medal match awaiting the winner, Kirsty was the first competitor to miss, meaning that she had to settle for sixth place.

However, it is an indication of her progress given that she finished 17th in the same event in the last Commonwealth Games in India four years ago.

Her continued potential in the sport has already been recognised earlier this year when she was selected by British Shooting as one of 15 athletes chosen for its GB Academy Programme.
