Car crashed over 50ft cliff near Glenarm

Two Larne women had a miraculous escape after the car in which they were passengers crashed on to the beach at Coast Road, near Glenarm, in the spring of 1965.

The black Volkswagen, which was being driven by a sailor from Warrenpoint, plunged over the cliff near the “Madman’s Window”. It crashed on to the beach 50ft below. The vehicle was said to have been “written off”.

All four occupants managed to escape from wreckage virtually unhurt. They were taken to hospital where they were treated for lacerations and shock.

The driver and his friend were crew members on board the MV Spaniel which had docked in Belfast. They had been on a sightseeing trip to the Antrim Coast when the accident occurred.

A Glenarm resident said: “How they survived beats me. It was a miraculous escape from certain death.”
