No gentlemen were found in Carrick

Councillors were involved in a dispute over a signpost to toilets in Carrick town centre in August 1967.

Some members objected to the wording of the sign which pointed to the “ladies’” and “men’s”.

It was noted that the term “gentlemen’s” was not used.

Councillor Eric Totton complained about the lcoation of the sign suggesting that it would “lead the public down to the coal quarry instead of the toilets”.

Assistant engineer George McFaul joked that members could “take people by the hand and lead them right into the toilets”.

Cllr Martha Beattie asked for the toilets to be opened late during a festival fortnight to facilitate “hundreds” of holidaymakers.
