Profumo wife in Larne to open TA centre

The “vivacious and charming” Larne-born star of stage and screen Valerie Profumo (nee Hobson) offically opened the town’s new Territorial Army centre in May 1965.

Valerie, wife of Secretary of State for War John Profumo, lived at Chaine Memorial Road as a baby, whilst her father, a Royal Navy commanding officer, was stationed in the town during World War I.

Commenting on her return to Larne, she said: “I have enjoyed nmy brief visit this time so much. I have had such a friendly welcome that my husband and I will be back shortly for a touring and fishing holiday.”

According to the East Antrim Times, Mrs. Profumo had been “elegantly dressed in a swing Raglan style coat in kingfisher blue” with a high-crowned bowler hat of the same colour.

She had a brooch of the Royal Ulster Rifles pinned to her by Lieut. Col RGM Maddocks of the 6th Battalion TA.

It had been presented by Major D Moorehead (Royal South Downs) on behalf of the battalion and architects of the new building.
