Over 1000 Bridge Players compete at European Bridge Championships

COLERAINE man Rex Andersen is one of over 1000 Bridge Players from close on 40 countries throughout Europe are competing in the 51st European Bridge Championships at the Citywest Hotel, Dublin.

The European Bridge Championships are held every second year and were secured for Ireland after Greece withdrew in early May. President of the European Bridge League Dr Yves Aubry at the official opening of the Championships said: “We are delighted that Ireland has agreed to host the 51st Championships at such short notice. We are looking forward to enjoying the wonderful Irish hospitality that all European Bridge Players experienced when the Championships were last held in Killarney.

Ireland is being represented in the Open Team event by the team that won the Silver Medal in the 2005 Championships in Warsaw:

Tom Hanlon (Rochfortbridge) and Hugh McGann (formerly Fermoy, now Leeds)

Nick FitzGibbon (Dublin) and Adam Mesbur (Dublin)

John Carroll (Dublin) and Tommy Garvey (formerly Dublin, now London)

Non-playing Captain David Jackson and Coach Thomas McCormac (both Dublin).

The Irish Women’s Team is:

Valarie Hand and Aileen O’Keeffe (Dublin)

Gilda Pender (Dublin) and Hilary McDonagh (Ballaghdereen)

Emer Joyce (Clifden) and Joan Kenny (Headford)

Non-playing Captain Gay Keaveney (Galway).

The Irish Senior (over 60) Team is:

Pat McDevitt (Donegal, now Boston and reigning World Senior Pairs Champion) and Rory Timlin (Dublin, now Galway)

Pat Barry (Tipperary) and Rex Andersen (Coleraine)

Michael McDonagh (Galway, now Mullingar) and Eddie Fitzgerald (Dublin, now Galway)

Non-playing Captain Donal Garvey (Cork).
