Ballymoney Fourths got back to winning ways with a comfortable victory over Larne Thirds.

Ballymoney crossed the try line seven times during this entertaining game. Scores by Darren Smyth (3), John Richmond (2) Aidy White and Sam Bartlett with Aidy White converting four of the tries and Jimmy Speers converting one

The Ballymoney pack gained the upper hand early in this match. The productive driving and mauling gave the centre partnership of Smyth and Richmond a lot of opportunities to cause havoc in the visitors defence. It was a Darren Smyth ‘special’ that opened the scoring for Ballymoney and this was also the pick to the first half tries. Smyth collected up the ball outside the 22 metre line and whizzed past three defenders for the score.

The second half kicked off with Ballymoney playing into a strong wind. A couple of injuries saw a quick reshuffle of the Ballymoney pack. John Hunter replacing captain John Waide at prop and Jimmy Speers coming off wing to replace Hooker Wallace Gregg. The changes had no effect on the home sides dominance with the visitors again immediately coming under pressure. Try of the match came right at the end of the second half, when deep inside Larne territory the Ballymoney number eight Ricky Millar picked up from the base of the scrum. Quick recycling of the ball from the forwards saw Davy Calvin pick out the charging John Richmond who powered his way over the line for the score.

Team manager Davy McCue commented after the game. “That was another good performance. The forwards took control of the game and we never looked in danger of losing. We demonstrated some clinical finishing today, however lack of concentration at times let Larne in for three soft scores.”

The Fourths now prepare for next weekend’s league fixture, away to Antrim.
