Salto gymnast gets the golds in LA

Salto gymnast Kirsty Devlin was the toast of Ireland on Tuesday as she won the team’s first gold at the Special Olympics World Summer Games.

The talented 21 year-old then added another gold, two silvers and a fourth place ribbon in a stunning day’s work in Los Angeles.

Kirsty’s mum Elizabeth was understandably beaming at the thought of her daughter’s celebrity status.

She said: “I’m absolutely so proud – the tears were in my eyes, watching Kirsty. She’s just amazing. The whole family is so proud of her.

“There are four of us out here in LA supporting Kirsty – myself, my brother and his wife and my son. She’ll be a celebrity when she gets home – everyone will shake her hand and congratulate her.

“They all love her back in Belfast – everyone loves her!”

Kirsty’s gold medals came in the rope and ribbon events in the Gymnastics Rhythmic Level 1 in Collins Court Wooden Centre in UCLA, where she put in some fine performances. Her silver medals came in the ball and all round competitions while she secured her fourth placed ribbon in the hoop.
