St Peter’s go through

ST Peter’s became the first local side to progress to the next round of a championship.

They defeated Camlough club Shane O’Neill’s last Saturday night at the Athletic Grounds.

The Whites had just a point to spare at the end of this Intermediate first round tie and they would have to thank former Armagh minor player Niall McConville for the win. McConville struck in the dying minutes with a long range fisted point to put the Freecrow men into the next round.

St Peter’s, before the leagues split, had been one of the front ranked teams at the top of the second division and their timely victory last Saturday night will be a welcome boost in the run up to the second half of the season.

St Peter’s supporters would no doubt agree that the introduction of the returned Niall Creaney was the turning point and responsible for the winning of the game.

Back in 2009 the Whites minor team were narrowly beaten by Shane O’Neill’s in an all-county championship semi-final and the south Armagh side went on to win the title.

Several players from that particular team are now involved with the St Peter’s senior side.

Meanwhile Pinebank side Éire Óg were comfortably beaten in their Intermediate Championship opener against Silverbridge who, along with Killeavey, could be seen as the favourites to win the competition.
