Three defeats on the bounce in week to forget

Lurgan Seniors had a busy week with three games in five days, all ending in defeat, two league games without a point and only a solitary rink win which saw them crash out of the NIBA senior cup.

The seniors will be looking to bounce back next weekend after a good week of practice.

The first game of the week was on Tuesday night which saw the seniors travel to Banbridge, the team failed to settle and against a team that should be competing at the top of the table punished every mistake as the home team romped home 122-57.

The second game of the week saw the team at home in the NIBA cup against Lisnagarvey and looking to put the previous evening behind them Lurgan suffered a hangover as they fell 96-69 with the only positive being a strong rink win by skip H Cosgrove.

Rink scores: R.M. Montgomery 7 – 43 N Mulholland; A Roberts 14 – 26 N Graham; A Briggs 14 – 19 I Craig ; H Cosgrove 34 – 8 P Cromie.

On Saturday they were at home against local rivals Portadown and this game rounded off a terrible week for the senior team that seen them defeated 101-58.

Lurgan’s Senior team is away to Carrickfergus in an NIBA Division 1 match on Saturday at 2.00pm; while the B team took on Whitehead B at their green on Wednesday evening in the quarter-final of NIBA Junior Challenge Cup.

The B team resume their league programme on Saturday at home to Bangor side, Castle B at 2.00pm.

Hoping to follow on from their 7-point success against Ballyholme last week, Lurgan Ladies play Donaghadee in an NIWBA Senior League match at home on Thursday at 2.30 pm.

Mansel Montgomery’s and Alan Roberts’ rinks are still in the NIBA Senior Fours Competition and have reached the quarter-finals. Montgomery’s rink is at home to I Gallagher’s Banbridge rink on Wednesday evening at 6.30pm, while Roberts’ rink travels the short distance to Portadown to challenge Billy Martin’s rink.

There are two matches in the Veterans’ Leagues, Lurgan 1 at home to Dromore and Lurgan 2 away to Warrenpoint on Monday; both matches starting at 1.30 pm. Lurgan’s Hatch Cup team are away to Londonderry Park in a 3rd round tie on Friday, while Peter McGrail’s McCullough Cup four has reached the 2nd round, having beaten Comber 19-11. They travel to Larne on Thursday afternoon to meet a Curran four. Also on Thursday afternoon the Lurgan Triple plays Ward Utd on the Lurgan green in the Richardson Trophy Tournament and the Lurgan Pair meet Pickie’s in the third of Thornton Pairs Cup.

The Mid-Ulster team is away to Portadown on Thursday night in their return leg 1st Round match having a 28-shot lead from the 1st leg.
