Under 21 Championship begins this weekend

BOTH the senior and intermediate sections of the All County Under 21 Championship start this weekend.

Teams who compete in the first division will compete in the senior section with clubs who field in division two line out in the intermediate group.

First round games have been pencilled in for 12 o’clock on Sunday and, with the exceptions of Éire Óg who have an Intermediate Shield final and Clann Éireann whose match with Killeavey has been put back, all the other local sides are in action.

The big game sees derby rivals Wolfe Tones play Sarsfields at Father Dan McGeown Park in what should be an exciting contest. Clan na Gael, who would be one of the favourites for the competition and with a bit of luck could have won last year’s title are away to Ballymacnab.

In the intermediate section, Mullaghbawn host St Paul’s and St Peter’s are at home to Shane O’Neill’s. The competition will be run off over a tight schedule with the finals being possibly held at the Athletic Grounds before the end of the month.

This week sees two senior shield finals taking place. On Thursday night, Sarsfields play Dromintee (7.30 in Davitt Park) and on Sunday, Éire Óg will play Grange in the intermediate section.
